1 down...

1 to go! 4 hours in the coldest room at isu is always great. can't wait to do it again tomorrow :) i feel like i am going to die right now but i think that should be easily mitigated by a nice, long run! oh, and my completely non-functional emergency replacement visa came today! yippee. oh man, i wish it was not so cold :( or, at least it could rain! sheesh, france....

"viva la vida!"

thanks jojo! so, just here studying for exams. ha! anyway, classes ended on friday and now we are revising for exams on wednesday and thursday. seriously exciting! so, my room is spotless, all of my laundry is done, i am totally committed to my daily runs... the usual procrastination process. plus, my stennis guy just sent me a load of stuff and wanted my "critical imput" on it, which is really cool, but i don't have much time at the moment. but, the internship is def going to be more than i could have hoped for so i am REALLY excited (and a bit scared...).

it's snowing here again. the high's are mostly gonna be around -1 C so that sucks. but, it did rain on sunday! i was so happy! and, i even managed to get a run in while it was still raining. nothing beats rain streaming your face! now ths sun is freakin out again-rar. and, no rain in sight in the forecast.... bigger rar.

short post, gotta stop procratinating at some point! we are t-20 hours to first exam...

i have been up for way too long and am operating on a blood loss... so bear with me. get to find out the results today! maybe i'll be able to officially eat rice again soon......

pReTtY iN pInK

last night we went to cheer on our esteemed banker and captain of the strasbourg hockey team, olivier escuder, in their opening game of the season. it was so cool! i have decided that hockey is one of my favorite spectator sports-love the action and the fluidity of movement. ;) olivier hooked us up with free vip tickets which meant that we got drinks and food during the second intermission. coolah! it was def a great time. after that, we went to murphy’s to hang out while people grabbed pasta from next door, and then we trooped on to chris and nicole’s. good stuff! after that, it was pumpkin time for me and i managed to grab the last tram home.

what else has been happening? well, we had this microgravity project that was due on thursday so mostly our time was spent working on that. it snowed on wednesday (!), which i was particularly unhappy about, and i got to know a side of some individuals that i was better off not knowing, but c’est la vie. :(

friday we went to visit the DLR and the university of Stuttgart. it started off with the bus that left at 5:50am… that was brutal. but, being the extraordinary sleeper that i am, i promptly fell asleep until we hit the rest stop. i wasn’t going to get off the bus at first, but i am sure glad i did! i was chillin with my leopard blanket wrapped about me when in comes these dudes with vests made of some straggly fur and bells! it was the coolest thing (their hair was the best part) and i realized that i was on the wrong bus. and, can you believe it, they looked at ME like I was the crazy one… interesting. at the dlr, we got to see their rocket test facilities and some of the other places where they do research and testing. we almost got to see a test being done, but apparently they were afraid that it was going to blow up or something. too bad.

we got back on the bus and magically arrived at Stuttgart (magic=sleep! i think i was out before the wheels started moving and when i was woken up, we were already parked). we got lunch (i think everyone completely pigged) and then trooped on to our tour of the institute for space systems. honestly, it was freakin awesome. i mostly have no idea what they were talking about in detail, but we got to see 8 or 9 aspects of the institute and what the facilities are used for and such. seriously awesome stuff. i want to learn german so i can go to school there! they did such an excellent job of hosting us and spending time with us that i felt bad for being so tired. i made myself pay attention because, really, they were so kind to do this and break from their research/class time. all in all, even though it was an extremely long day, it was an interesting trip. ;)

i am still tired from last week! which means that, i am just going to rest today and maybe read some stuff later. i think that i’ll also look for a bicycle case and see how much they cost. i would really, really like to take my bike down to stennis with me so perhaps it won’t be too expensive to fly it.

i hope everyone is enjoying their sunday and getting some rest before the week starts again :)

the best day in the world!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! yay! i am so happy-this is one of my favorite days of the year. i love anything that is pink and that has hearts so it truly is a fabulous day. and! it is even cloudy today... if it rains, it will be perfect. i really do have actual valentines for everyone, but they may not be delivered until easter. but, i am at least going to send e-cards or something because it would be impolite to not recognize the sweetness of this day. i hope that everyone has a smashing day and smiles lots!

hugs.m

i'll post on the end of last week tomorrow or something... and, i'll let you know how the hockey game turns out tonight... go strasbourg!

"wonderboxes"

that is what we study here at isu. popularly known as satellites, we had a fun lecture on small satellites by a guy from a space institute in stuttgart. then we had 2 lectures from the unhappiest french dude ever on how much economists in the space sector suck. "space is defense dressed up in baby clothes" hmmm..... ah, 2 hours of fun! well, anyway, it passed which was half the point. man, i have felt so unspeakably awful the past little bit here and i thought my stomach was literally going to kill me for about 4 minutes in the middle of the fun... that would have been tragic! after that, the chills came so i went home and back to bed for the rest of the afternoon. i am hoping that it is just some flu-type thing... man, really do NOT want to chill with the lovely er staff anymore!

valentine's day is coming! yay! how can all these french people not be smiling at this time of year? and the sun is out so they should be happy about that too. not that i am. where is the rain? i need some cloudy, gray days-this sun stuff needs to go away for a couple weeks at least. :(

oh, i did get up for a run this morning so that was great. the birds were were all up and singing-ah, it was lovely! it woulda been a bit better if my stomach wasn't so pissed but i am optimistic that it will get better soon (well, it better!).

funny, i think that chingy's "holidae inn" just got released here-it came out last year at this time in the states. crazy delay. but my favorite song is outkast's "i like the way you move"-man, what a sweet song! i could move all day to that! yea, yea-random, sorry, it was just on and i had to mention it. :) and while i'm on the subject of random music... george michael has a song out! what the heck?! i thought that he was banned from the music industry or something. i couldn't believe it and i thought that it was probably some crazy german guy that wanted to sound like him, but no. it was the real mccoy-bad news. oh, nice... rza "ich kenne nichts" is my all-time fav here. but, it's def gotta be the german version. former wu-tanger... coolah.

i made the greatest lentils tonight! i finally found dill here -"anish"- and i had some eggplant in it, along with some onions and whatever other spices... then i added some pepper, but i flipped the wrong side and dumped half the bottle in. argh! dude, so freakin spicy... terribly unfortunate. i ate as much as i could but it can't be helping my stomach! i'm gonna take some in to bhavini tomorrow-she was complaining about her plain lentils. maybe we can swap ;)

good times, good times

on friday we had a mock conference on the 'prevention of an arms race in space'. it was interesting. i was a part of the US delegation, which means that we were against disarmament of any kind. it makes sense with respect to national security and such, but it is a bit crazy. it was also a bit irritating that people were acting like pricks everytime we stated our position. the uk was objecting more than we were! plus, half the countries that would support us in the real world seemed to ‘forget’ what their actual position would be. and, it’s funny because i don’t think that anyone on the US team actually agreed with the position that we had to represent, but our classmates were attacking us like it was personal or summat-thanks guys. appreciate it.

but, it was cool and i got to wear my pink suit so i was happy! it didn’t finish up until, like 5pm or something, so i think everyone was bushed. however, we had cultural night afterwards so…

Britain, Scotland (and Orkney), and Greece all presented and they did an awesome job! esp props to my girl, bhavini, for a fantastic Indian dance! she did a smashing job and i am so impressed by her strength and her beauty… def awe-inspiring.

ollie and doug also taught us some Scottish dances. i have no idea what they were really-i just remember getting flung down the line and having to turn and stuff and it was all very crazy indeed! but, good job on getting everyone to dance ;) and, ollie was brilliant in his kilt!

saturday was fabulous here. it finally rained (so much sunshine the last week-i thought it was spring!), so i was really happy! i have decided that i am a flower (perhaps a daisy or a tulip?) and flowers die without rain… i NEED rain to live. so, i went shopping and expressly did not take a jacket or an umbrella because i was so happy to walk around in the down-pour and feel the water running down my face. apparently, most were not happy because all these people were pissed off at the fact that their hair was ruined and all the glass was steamy. i, on the other hand, was perfectly happy with my drowned-rat status. yay!

mostly, i went to sephora to experiment with the make-up. it was a blast and since they even have make-up remover there, you can play all you want! either way, i think i still walked out of there with one eye decked out in complete baby blue/lavender get-up while the other was sporting this black and silver motif. hehe-no wonder people on the tram stare at me!

but, i was really in search of valentines. i want the kind that little kids give to their classmates in elementary school. dude-i can’t even find the candy hearts here! since valentine’s is one of my fav days of the year, i have to give them to all of my classmates. i even dreamt last night that i was in the states (for some reason i don’t recall) and i was so happy cause i could buy these valentines. i am so cool. so, fingers-crossed, hopefully france will get it together in the next couple days, otherwise i am going to have to start inventing.

happy sunday!

tubular thursday!

wow. i am so freakin happy today! we had a meeting yesterday after lectures about our russia trip and we are gonna get to go for the low, low price of ~700 euros! how super awesome is that?! anyway, that won't be until the end of march but it is still pretty neat....

after that, we didn't have anymore lecture so i caught a ride downtown with ollie and chris. they went for lunch but i just rambled around because it was a fantastic day-sunny, warm, not too windy... reminds me of april-not february! anyway, i just browsed some stores before coming home to accomplish dreaded task.... calling my internship guy.... scary!

finally i called him and he is so freakin cool! i am so stoked for this internship to start... hurry up module 4! we chatted for a bit about france and school and stuff before hammering down to business. we talked about the basics of the problem and some of the theory/research surrounding the issues and i guess he sent me a 300 page document (some light reading!) that i am looking forward to reading (once our printers are working again) it. essentially, i get to the liason between nasa/stennis and all the 'stakeholders' being the FHA, NCAR, TRB and a whole host of other alphabet soup organizations. plus, NCAR (national center for atmospheric research, which is located in boulder, co is one that i will be doing a lot of work with so bill was saying that i'll most likely have to go out there at least once or twice and maybe shoot up to HQ in DC for a bit too-sweetness. how freakin cool is this? honestly, i just want to get started researching and coming up with ideas! so many exclamation marks!

this morning we had a field trip to another university in strasbourg to check out their state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, gas chromatographers, and electron microscopes. EOST is a research center focusing on geophysics, geology, atmoshperic sciences, and oceanography and is primarily funded by CNRS (french scientific research center). really quickly:
mass spectrometry:analytical tool for measuring the atomic masses of isotopes by charging atoms with then separating them on the basis of their charge-to-mass ratio via electric and magnetic fields

gas chromatography:tool used to separate liquids and gases that can used to analyze levels of atmospheric gases and aerosols. useful for monitoring pollution.

electron microscopy:high-resolution imaging system utilizing short-wave electron waves used to analyze different rock types and materials that can identify the relative amounts of different substances in various samples

anyway, we got to see all these machines and how they work along with seeing the coolest rock museum ever! my favorite was the malachite avec azurite sample. all of the malachite was sweet and the bright yellow sulphides were really awesome too! too bad i forgot my camera... i wish i had a rock collection like this. anyway, i had a blast. now we have a couple lectures on... something. hope it is interesting.

"i do very little, but i do it very well" -compliments of my good buddy from scotland, ollie

what’s the dealy, yo?

yea, what is the deal?? is it just me, or has that all-important time of re-evaluating-your-life rolled around again? well, it COULD just be me i guess….

it’s wednesday and we just had a pretty cool workshop on ‘the digital microscope’ in which we got to look at different rock samples. i love all types of geography (yes, even social!), but there will always be a special place in my heart for all types physical. the next time i am at uni, i am DEF taking loads of physical geography classes! and, biology… and, ecology... and, forestry.... and, geology.... and, soil science... and, all the other good stuff! obviously, i am doomed to always be in school ;) yay!

which leads me to thinking about what i am going to do with myself. it is useless because i have no way to affect what will happen 6 months from now. i am set to go to stennis for 3 months, back to Strasbourg and then ? in august-i need a longer term plan/situation than this! of course, i can’t really plan effectively because i don’t know what will pop up in Mississippi and what i’ll come across while i’m there. plus, if i do more school in Europe, those deadlines don’t pop up until 2 months before they close-frustrating. but, i guess i have the opportunity to learn patience... or something…

even though it appears that i have been/am in a particularly foul mood, i’m not. i’m just in process of evaluating and eliminating. it’s a good thing. i will not elaborate anymore at risk of sounding thoroughly odd.

what else is up? i am (hopefully) going to chat with my good buddy Bill Graham down at Stennis at some time today. we arranged to talk last week, but apparently all the lines were busy/not enough bandwidth available? so, i’ll try to call him today to chat about what project i am going to be working on. he’s sent me some material already and i must admit, i am super stoked (and scared) to commence work! woohoo!

it’s pretty warm here right now as well, which is a very nice change and one that i hope sticks. unfortunately, all this mental turmoil has kept me from my routine workouts (and is most likely hindering the process i’m sure) but i just can’t get enough energy up to even THINK about it. i mean, the idea is good, but i tried once and couldn’t make it and i have even less energy now. well, in time, i’m sure all will be rectified.

i had loads of lentils, onions, and garlic last night for dinner, which made me super happy! i love garlic so much! but, i’m sure that i smell a bit funny today so i guess i’ll just hang out by myself for awhile. and, i am wearing half of my ‘jammies at school right now as well, which is also contributing to my perfect bubble of happiness. do you know what i am really in the mood for? that’s right-need that yearly trip to Hawaii to kick in right about now. but, if i remember correctly, i think that this mood must happen every year at this time so i’ll just try to weather it and hope for the best!

today my heart hurts so lots and lots of luvs and hugs and good laughs to all who are dear to me! take care and smile lots, okay?

luvluv.m

ps-i'm playing with the colors on this thing so it'll prob be really ugly for awhile :) i just can't be asked to have a 'normal' looking thing that represents me!

yay, it's almost valentine's day!!!!!

how y’all doin? hopefully everyone is having an excellent start to the week and looking forward to a terrific tuesday! (hehe-sorry, have to be drippingly lame sometimes!)

i left you on friday when i was planning to go see a documentary about the florida election fiasco. unfortunately, by some sort of random miscommunication, i missed meeting up with the people going and, after some unplanned but very productive shopping (!), i just went home to have a nice, quiet evening. then, random people showed up! junior apparently invited jaffer, gilbert, erling and heather for dinner of which i had no clue about. it was fun though! i really enjoyed getting to hang out with my fav Indians and hear about their cultures and exchanging some palm reading/other future-telling methods. rock!

i planned a party at buck’s house (yay-gotta love parties that aren’t at your house) but, understandably, he was a bit ‘worn-out’ so we went to juan’s instead. our favorite scot brought something that is apparently illegal in most coutries (absinth?) but it had a pretty cool ritual that went along with it. you put a shot in a glass, pour sugar onto a teaspoon, dip the spoon of sugar in the absinth, light the spoon/sugar/absinth on fire until the sugar boils, blow out the fire, dump it into the drink, stir it around and drink fast! argh! looked brutal…

then, after the tram people left, we went wandering around (literally) and i have lovely pics of cian and ollie climbing the cathedral. and ollie climbing some random thing on a bridge too. too bad i had a skirt on! but, given the earlier tendencies of the evening, i figured it would be best for me to stay put on the ground.

on sunday, the super bowl was playing at murphy’s pub at 0:30! cool! but, i didn’t go cause i was just not feeling so super…. all i have to say is ‘wardrobe malfunction’-i think not!.…

so, that’s how it goes.

today, we had a very ‘fun’ TP meeting and now we are ‘working’ on some contract negociation thing. my real endeavor for the day lies a bit later at the auchon where i will be frantically searching for valentines. on the order of the old school ones that we used to send when we were 10. if i can’t find them, i will just make them i suppose cause I LOVE VALENTINE’S DAY! and i will not miss it for the world. and, everyone will celebrate it with me if they want to or not!

i have a lot to say that has nothing to do with the ‘daily events’ aforementioned. but, this already a bit long so i’ll have to post later. must be the coming full moon (!) or something….
